| A successful event to mark the creation of ScotCHEM was held on 14 September 2005 at the Royal Museum, Edinburgh. This was attended by approximately 200 delegates representing academic institutions from the UK and abroad, UK-based chemical companies, societies and organisations with a specific interest in Chemistry and national funding agencies.
The full day programme was introduced by Professor Ken McKendrick, Chairman of ScotCHEM, who outlined the background to the ScotCHEM initiative and described the new structures that had been created. This was followed by presentations by the following speakers of the highest international calibre in Chemistry:
- Professor Dick Zare, Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science, Stanford University
- Professor David MacMillan, Earle C. Anthony Professor of Chemistry, CalTECH
- Professor Malcolm Chisholm, Professor of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, Ohio-State University
- Professor Dr Joachim Engels, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt
- Professor Rudy Marcus, Arthur Amos Noyes Professor of Chemistry, CalTECH
In addition, presentations relating to national strategies for Chemistry research were delivered by:
- Professor David Gani, Director, Research Policy and Strategy Directorate, SHEFC
- Professor Rodney Townsend, Director of Science and Technology, Royal Society of Chemistry
